New Movies: 30 Seconds vs. Final Destination 5

Before we discuss flicks, a warm &  heartfelt congrats go out to True Blood star Sam Trammell (he’s Sam on the show) and longtime GF Missy Yager, who have just welcomed twin boys. Bravo!

Okay, so it’s movie time. In fact, this week brings with it an opportunity to catch what I think is one of the two best movies of summer (that’s this Muggle’s opinion, anyway).  Theoretically you could catch each of my selections now, since they’re both currently playing. The one that bowed a few weeks back,Crazy, Stupid, Love is just plain Crazy, Stupid, Good.  But you probably already know that. The other one which you should see —  a.s.a.p. so at least you can act bored and yawn when, seven months hence,  everyone else is scrambling to watch it on account of those Oscar nod(s) —  is The Help.

Headed up by a stellar cast that includes Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer  and Bryce Dallas Howard, The Help takes place in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962 and it’s based of course on the runaway bestselling novel. Sure it’s highly-charged subject matter, and sure it’s already starting to get controversial feedback – so see it and let us now what YOU think.

Speaking of controversy, there’s another movie opening in theaters today that’s generating plenty right now to do with its basis upon a true story. 30 Minutes or Less deals with an unsuspecting  pizza delivery guy who gets a bomb strapped to his body before being made to rob a bank. In what looks like a bizarre twist, it’s being billed as a comedy. While it may in fact be funny (and I’m a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg, who stars) the sticking point here is the actual incident a few years back where another guy really had this happen to him – only he didn’t survive. Whether or not this impacts viewers remains to be seen. Actually, it’s being marketed towards young men (particularly since it also stars Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) and if ever there was a group impervious to bad PR, this is it. Consequently, I predict that it’ll fare okay at the box office, but probably not as well as Final Destination 5, which is also opening. I’ve never seen any of the FD canon, although I do know that they’ve made gobs of money and have (or had, certainly) a novel premise to do with young, and extremely attractive people trying to thwart Death. Death which has, by the way, let the cast know he’s en route. These movies are not targeted towards me or anyone I know, but they do enjoy massive popularity among tweens, teens, and anyone else who likes to be scared/lose sleep and get bludgeoned by outrageous special effects.

For those who a) do not wish to be frightened, b) are made uncomfortable by the antics of Danny McBride & Aziz Ansari,  c) have small children, or d) are bored and were born between 1994 and 2003, we have the brand new Glee: The 3D Concert Movie opening. This film is exactly what it sounds like, and will be very popular among a certain crowd. And avoided like the plague by almost everyone else who may be of the feeling that “sure the show’s cool, but we don’t need to take it quite that far”.

That’s what’s out there at the multiplex. Have a great weekend and as always, let us know what you see and what you thought.
